The sub-class of category:Quirk class 4 in which the vowel of the base form and the past participle is the same. The vowel of the past tense is different. 4 B is further sub-divided into groups classified by the vowels concerned.

  • In 4 B a, the vowel of both the base from and the past participle is '-oh-' (IPA: /əʊ/). There are four verbs here: 'blow', 'grow', 'know' and 'throw'. All have the sequence '*ow ~ *ew* ~ *own', /əʊ - uː - əʊn/.
  • In 4 B b, the equivalent vowel is '-eh-' (IPA: /eɪ/). There are three verbs here ('forsake', 'shake' and 'take'), with some derivatives. All have the sequence '*a-e ~ *ook ~ *aken', /eɪ - uː - eɪkən.
  • The two verbs in 4 B c ('forbid' and 'give', + some derivatives) have '-i-' (IPA: /ɪ/) in the base and past participle, and '-a-' (with different pronunciations) in the past tense.
  • 4 B d has one verb, draw.
  • 4 B e only has fall, as
  • 4 B f only has eat,
  • 4 B g only has see, and
  • 4 B h only has slay.
