Invigilate - invigorate

Do not confuse the two verbs invigilate and invigorate, as may be done by confusing the liquid consonants 'l' and 'r'.

  • To invigilate now means 'to watch over an exam [to prevent any bad practice]'. Invigilation is a chore disliked by most teachers (invigilators).
Pronunciation note: the '-g-' in invigilate and its derivatives is a soft '-g-', like a '-j-'. The stress in invigilate falls on the second syllable, 'in-VIJ-ill-ate' (IPA: /ɪn ˈvɪdʒ ɪl eɪt/), though in the derivative invigilation the stress falls on the fourth syllable: 'in-vij-ill-ASHE-n', /ɪn vɪdʒ ɪl ˈeɪ ʃən/.
  • To invigorate means 'to give vigour to', 'to animate', 'to fill with strength or life'.
Pronunciation note: the '-g--' in invigorate is a hard '-g-', like that in 'go' and 'gate'. The stress falls on the second syllable, 'in-VIGG-er-ate', IPA: /ɪn ˈvɪg ər eɪt/.
