Heinous
From Hull AWE
The traditional pronunciation in British academic circles has the same first vowel as that in 'sane' IPA: /ˈheɪn əs/. The US has a tendency to pronounce it with the vowel of 'seen' IPA: /ˈhiːn əs/. Resist the temptation to do so, unless you are speaking American English.
It is an error in both countries to end with the last two syllables of 'obvious'. In no country that AWE knows of should you pronounce the word with three syllables: neither 'HAY-ny-us' (IPA: /ˈheɪn ɪ əs/) nor 'HEEN-y-əs(IPA: /ˈhiːn ɪ əs/).
