'plane
From Hull AWE
You may see this spelling in older texts. Until well into the second half of the twentieth century, it was the orthodox way to write the name of the flying machine, in full the aeroplane. Do not use the older form.
As the air age began, the usual word for the place where air travel started and finished (where aircraft took off and landed) was an aerodrome, sometimes abbreviated to 'drome.
See archaic contractions, 'bus, 'phone.
