Note that the French word parlement is not the equivalent of the English parliament.

  • The British 'High Court of Parliament' is the bicameral legislature of the United Kingdom. It has established a model of political organization in which the legislature appoints the executive government from within its own ranks.

the parlements were not equivalent to the parliaments of the Anglo-Saxon world, though etymologically identical. The French parlements of the ancien regime were law-courts hearing appeals. There were thirteen of these, one for the separate provinces of the kingdom. They were abolished in 1790. (The lower house of the current legislature of France is the Assemblée nationale, or National Assembly.)
