Mnemosyne - the first 'm-' is usually silent, although some speakers realize it: the normal pronunciation is 'ne-MOZZ-i-nay', IPA: /nɪ (or ə) ˈmɒz ɪn ɪ (or e)/ - was, in ancient Greek mythology, the goddess of memory. She was a Titan. She had nine children by Zeus, the chief god; these were the nine Muses. In later western tradition, these were: Clio, Muse of history; Thalia, Muse of comedy; Melpomene, Muse of tragedy; Euterpe, Muse of music; Terpsichore, Muse of dancing; Erato, Muse of the lyre and lyric poetry; Polyhymnia, Muse of mime; Urania, Muse of astronomy; and Calliope, Muse of epic poetry.
