Onomastics

This is ‘the study of names’. It is essentially the study of proper names. The three great branches of onomastics among English linguists are first names or forenames (traditionally called Christian names in English culture), surnames and place names. There are Dictionaries, or other works of reference, for all these. Consult these for more knowledge.
